CarPlay Users Get the Biggest Navigation Update in Years

The release of iOS 15 a couple of months ago marked the debut of 3D navigation in Apple Maps, though this feature was originally available only on the iPhone.

Apple, therefore, promised to bring this highly anticipated update to CarPlay at a later time, and as it turns out, the release of iOS 15.2 will finally make it happen.

Before anything else, here’s some context.

Apple has been working very hard on making Apple Maps a worthy alternative to Google Maps, but the company’s slow rollout eventually pushed users to competing products. On the other hand, users in the United States have always been prioritized for these major updates, so they’re always the first to try out all improvements.

And the 3D navigation update that was announced in iOS 15 makes no exception. Apple Maps is therefore getting support for a completely new mode that makes the navigation overall much more straightforward with 3D buildings, different colors for what you see on the road, and more traffic information right on the map.

Apple seems ready to bring this new experience to CarPlay as well, as iOS 15.2 enables it for iPhones configured to receive beta builds of the operating system.

As reported by someone on reddit, if you installed the latest iOS 15.2 beta, you can already try out the new 3D navigation on CarPlay in Apple Maps, though keep in mind this is only available in the United States.

The screenshots pretty much speak for themselves, and it’s pretty clear this is the biggest navigation update for Apple Maps in a long time. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean Apple is currently in a big rush to bring it to everybody, so don’t expect the availability to expand beyond the United States too fast.

iOS 15.2 doesn’t yet have a release date for production devices but expect it to go live in late November or early December.
