2021 Cupra Formentor Review

BODY TYPE: SUV
Cupra is one of the youngest car brands in the world. It started life in 1985 as the motorsport division of Spanish SEAT (initially as SEAT Sport), and made quite a name for itself in various racing series across the world.

The experience gained in racing prompted SEAT into giving the division a new name, Cupra, and have it design high performance versions of the road cars it made. In the years that followed, the SEAT Leon Cupra, for instance, became one of the hottest hatches available in Europe.

The fact that Cupra succeeded in this endeavor made SEAT confident enough to spin off the nameplate into a company of its own. Born in 2018, the Cupra brand did not forget where it started from, and recently gave their own interpretation of the new SEAT Leon once again.

But being independent means having your own car models, and for Cupra that spells Formentor. Described as a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) with a name inspired by a wild cape on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the Formentor was shown for the first time in the beginning on March 2020 as the “first model developed from the ground up by the brand.”

1Exterior design & features

The overall look and size of the Formentor is something you can expect from a brand belonging to Volkswagen. Riding on a wheelbase of 2,680 mm, the all-terrain vehicle is 4,450 mm long, 1,839 mm wide, and has a height of 1,511 mm.

Being a vehicle that belongs to what should be a performance brand, the SUV does look a bit more sculpted than its VAG siblings, and that goes for the entire body: front, rear and everything in between.

There are also some design elements that have been used on cars made by SEAT as well, like say the continuous light bar that unites the two stoplights at the rear, or the styling of the front lights.

To make it a bit more special in an already crowded segment, and trying to differentiate it some more from what else VAG is doing, Cupra went for a two-tone body riding high on 19-inch wheels. The paint scheme seen on the car shown as an example by the Spanish can be selected in one of five available colors: Graphene Grey, Dark Camouflage, Desire Red, Petrol Blue Matt, and Magnetic Tech Matt.

2Interior design, features
and passenger space

Being a more upmarket brand compared with SEAT, Cupra is offering higher-end materials for the interior surfaces. Sporting front bucket seats wrapped in leather, the Formentor’s interior shows tones of copper and dark aluminum throughout.

In front of the seats is the seemingly floating dashboard. If it seems familiar, that’s because we’ve just seen it in as a slightly different variant and in other dimensions on the Leon.

Even the steering wheel has the same shape, and at first sight the only thing different about it being the big Cupra logo in the middle, that has replaced the SEAT one. A closer look however reveals the engine start button and the CUPRA mode selector.

For what it’s worth, there is a full-LED wraparound ambient lighting across the front of the cabin and the doors that brings a touch of colored flavor to the interior.

The size of the Cupra SUV makes it clear that there is enough room inside for both passengers to enjoy, and for their luggage to be taken along in large quantities. According to Cupra, the SUV’s luggage capacity is 450 liters.

3Gadgets

The Formentor tries, and in most cases it succeeds, to be an SUV of its age, with all the required tech and gizmos on deck to serve the owner.

The SUV welcomes its driver with an adequate sign projected on the floor. Once seated in the driver’s seat, the human gets immediate access to the digital cockpit that comprises first and foremost a 12-inch panoramic screen.

The Formentor is equipped with SEAT’s Full Link system that provides Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto connectivity. USBs, Bluetooth and an embedded SIM card are other ways of interacting with the machine.

The SIM card gives access to the Connect app that comes with the Formentor. Using it, drivers can have remote access to data about driving, parking, vehicle status and, in the case of the plug-in variant, the capability to manage the charging process.

4Performance

The Formentor is available in two powertrain configurations, one comprising a gasoline engine and the other a plug-in hybrid. In both cases, power is harnessed by means of a DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The regular combustion engine variant, which is also the top of the range Formentor, comes as a 2.0-liter TSI that delivers 310 ps and 400 Nm of torque.

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.4-liter gasoline engine that cranks out 150 ps to an electric motor that delivers an extra 115 ps. Torque is rated at 400 Nm as well, and the electric range provided by the 13 kWh battery is of around 50 km (31 miles).

5Safety

The Formentor has been designed to be as stable as possible on the road thanks to the length of the wheelbase and the driver assistance systems fitted on it. Cupra took things seriously and also carefully set up the chassis and progressive steering to suit a diverse range of driving styles, and various driving conditions.

Technically, the Formentor is Level 2 autonomous, and is equipped with technologies like adaptive cruise control, and a wide range of aid technologies, such as emergency braking (handled through Brembo brakes), travel assist, and side and exit assist.

6Conclusion

Cupra plans to start delivering the first examples of the Formentor in the last quarter of 2020. Needless to say, a lot is riding on the success of the model.

The newborn Spanish brand chose to make an SUV first for obvious reasons, as the segment is still on the rise after all these years. The SUVs made by sister brand SEAT are in high demand in Europe, and it is to be expected the Formentor to cater to the needs of a segment of buyers the Spanish were not targeting until now.
